Two languages,
one credential.

The Credentialed Community Language test assesses how well you interpret between English and a Language Other Than English. It is administered by NAATI, and passing it may allow eligible applicants to claim Credentialed Community Language points in a points-based skilled migration visa application.

What it is

The service,
in plain terms.

CCL stands for Credentialed Community Language. The test assesses your ability to communicate at a community level between English and another language, known as a Language Other Than English, or LOTE. It is administered by NAATI, the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters.

It is not a professional interpreter or translator certification. Credentialed Community Language points may be available two ways — by passing the CCL test, or by holding NAATI certification as a translator or interpreter. They are different credentials, and the CCL test is the lighter of the two.

The test is delivered online through the Televic platform and supervised through ProctorExam, with appointments scheduled in Australian Eastern Time. You interpret two pre-recorded dialogues between a native English speaker and a native speaker of your LOTE, working in both directions. A chime tells you when to begin each segment.

There are no formal prerequisites, though NAATI advises that candidates need upper-intermediate skills in both languages. Marking is by deduction from full marks, and examiners assess three things: the accuracy of your interpretation, the quality of your language including grammar, register and naturalness, and the quality of your delivery including pauses, hesitations and self-corrections.

What the sitting involves

Six things the
examiners weigh.

The test is short, but it is assessed on several dimensions at once. Preparation works best when you know which of them is your weak point.

What Grace does

Support that is
actually hands-on.

Services vary between branches, so confirm course availability, schedules and fees with your branch directly. NAATI does not endorse third-party training providers, and states that such providers have no insider knowledge of the test — preparation helps you practise the format, nothing more.

Important

NAATI does not provide migration advice, and neither does this page. Test format, available languages, fees, sitting dates, processing times and whether a CCL result can be used in a visa application are set by NAATI and by the Department of Home Affairs, and all change from time to time. Treat this page as an introduction, not as advice, and confirm current details with NAATI, the Department of Home Affairs, or a registered migration agent before you act on it.
